50k's in 30 days 05/28/2009

No, this is not where you run 50kms in a month, although there is sprinting involved.
50k's in 30 days is where you set yourself a target amount of words to write in just 30 days. Others from RWA get involved. There are sprint sessions where you see how many words you can write or edit in set periods of time, ie, 10, 15 or 30 minutes. If you already have a wip, here is the chance to complete it and maybe get some editing done. I'm going to work on my historical which is already at 38,000 words. I have set a target of 50,000 words so it will be finished by the end of the month.... Not as easy as it sounds!

In the month of June 2009, I have my 11 year anniversary, my man's 29th birthday, my daughter's 2nd, my brother's 29th and my 27th. I have several small parties to attend and to throw. I am going away for a weekend of horse riding with my girlfriends and I still have to work, play house and change nappies in that time. I'm getting exhausted just thinking about it. I'll let you know each week how I'm doing. Hopefully my Amazon order takes a while so I don't get distracted by the new books I ordered yesterday. 'Her Notorious Viscount', 'Sins of a Wicked Duke' and 'Jessica's Guide to Dating on the Dark Side'. Should be fun but will have to wait till July :( And hopefully Molly (our kitten with the ringworm) will be healthy enough to make it home from the vets next week.

Now all I have to do is deflower an innocent (obviously not personally), make a stubborn man see that he is loved, set the scandals created in the meantime to simmer rather than boil and find a Happily Ever After.

But first, back to a night of sin and depravity in a gaming hell...

Momentum 05/21/2009

Today I wanted to talk about momentum (not the kind that keeps your car rolling down a hill when you leave the handbrake off). Do you somedays wonder how you still have fingerprints when you type so fast you can almost smell smoke? Other days you open your computer only to turn it off again because your brain feels like it's going to explode. Be it a hangover, a distraction or a block, what kills your momentum? Maybe it's not your momentum, perhaps it's the story? Did you take a wrong turn and get your characters lost in a world of misunderstandings and 'he said', 'she said'?

The last two weeks or so, I've been on a role. My historical WIP is now at 35,000 words and still going strong but what do I do with the one's that weren't so lucky? I have two contemporaries and another historical that all three died at some point or another and still don't have endings. The beginnings are great - if I do say so myself - but as I near the end,  I get blocked and write something stupid that just doesn't fit. I keep telling myself its because I don't want to see the end of the story. You get so wrapped up and fall in love with your own characters that it almost seems a shame to write 'The end'. I don't think I have a problem with a 'saggy middle', (no I'm not referring to the spare tyre). I love writing the dark moments and the epiphany moments so why do I seem to be having trouble with endings?

Maybe after I'm finished the one I'm working on I might spend some time backtracking through these unfinished HEA's and try to figure out where I went wrong... So what stops your momentum? For me it's the same old story. Kids, partner, housework, washing, work, the never-ending-story. Throw in the new kitten, Molly, who sadly has been isolated with ringworm - yes, yet more work. And then there's the internet. Stupid me stumbles across games like Facebook Scrabble and Bejewelled Blitz that I can't seem to say no to. They're like the sound of the pokies when someone wins and it makes me want to play more and more. I close my eyes and see combos of triangles, squares and little star thingies. When I play Scrabble, I justify it to myself that I'm extending and working out my vocabulary. Ha! What a whopper!!

Last week I decided to start writing at least a thousand words before turning the internet on but that pretty soon died too. I just can't stay away and if you're waiting for competition results you want to leave the internet plugged in and turned on all day just so you can keep checking your e-mails with bated breath. I also started reading Karen Hawkins, The Abduction of Julia, and I'm addicted to that as well. Now do I write, play or read?

Now that you've read my ramble for the week, close me down and go and write a few thousand words or if you aren't a writer, go and pick up the book you've been putting off reading, turn off the telly and get to it!

Stay dry and warm and enjoy the sunshine if you can see it. Have a nice weekend :)

Good morning, good afternoon, good evening to wherever you are in the world:)

Let me start by saying I've had an amazing week! I did thirteen thousand words on my own over two days and then another two thousand with the sprinters at RWA (thanks ladies). It is becoming rare that I can have such productive days but maybe my rant last week about being blocked shifted it a little bit? As a result of working so hard I haven't really had a chance to read this week and I've nearly given up on Temptation and Surrender. I love Stephanie but this one is too slow for me. I just picked up a new Sara Bennett so I'll let you know how I fare with that. Hopefully I'll have another great week next week and I won't have a chance to read. One can only hope!

As for movies... Wolverine was absolutely fantastic! If you want to see a fair bit more of Hugh Jackman than you've probably seen before (nice ass!) go and see it. I took my mum and we both had a ball!

Happy mothers day to everyone who celebrates it. I'm hoping for bacon and eggs in bed, maybe without the help to eat it this year, and a nice quiet day to write. Don't forget the worcesteshire and my coffee!

Have fun, be healthy, be creative!

    Disclaimer

Mostly this is a blog about my writing and writing related experiences but sometimes something will give the me the shits and I'll have a bit of a rant. I'll try not to be offensive but I sometimes open my mouth without asking my brain's permission so I'll apologise in advance.
